Children of divorce comprise a significant portion of the school population in the United States. more than one million children experience enate divorce separately year in the United States (U.S. Census Bureau, 2000). It has also been indicated that by the age of eighteen, approximately 40-50% of children will experience a parental divorce.
Since divorce affects such a significant number of children, a surge in literature and research-based studies have emerged addressing its impact on them emotionally, behaviorally, and academicianally (Amato, 2001; Amato & Keith, 1991; Hipke, Wolchik, Sandler, & Braver, 2002)
Many of these research-based studies and much of the resulting literature reinforces that children involved in divorce situations are at an increased risk for the developing of psychological, behavioral, social, and academic problems (Amato, 2000; Amato & Keith, 1991; Kelly, 2000; Simons & Associates, 1996). Amato and Keith (1991) and Amato (2001) published articles outlining studies comparing the well-being of children of divorce with that of children with parents who were quench married to one another. Results from both of these studies indicated that children from divorced parents scored significantly visit on a variety of factors, such as academic achievement, conduct, psychological adjustment, and well-being.
