Rhetorical Précis and Response
Elizabeth Thoman in the article, Rise of the epitome Culture: Reimagining the American Dream, argues that television advertising has created a in the alto seeher American Dream that is based on consumerism. Thoman supports her argument by showing that Americans have always sought after a dream, explaining that television advertising has shaped and defined us to be materialistic, and explaining that television advertising teaches how to think. The authors purpose is to allege us of everything that our advertisements are doing to our dreams so that we will be aspen poplar to try to avoid all the medias dreams, and have our hold dreams. The author writes in a formal tone to the readers of Media & set magazine.
There are two types of evidence used in this article, allusion and adept authority. For allusion, the author is formulation that our desire for a interrupt life goes back to the Bible days. This is allusion because a brief quotation to a textbook that the writer expects the reader to have many knowledge, the knowledge the reader possesses about the allusion is used to support the claim. The punt kind of evidence used in the article was expert authority.
For expert authority, the author asks an expert for her opinion and the expert responds with saying that we are partially to blame for TV advertisements being in our homes. This is expert authority because a person with credentials that demonstrates expertise in the topic that is being discussed.
The author used this text to introduce the idea that the American dream used to be based on this notion that ingenuity and technology and pass on were cornerstone to a successful future. She also started with personal sire evidence and the idea of watching television because it is something that everyone can tinge to. Also, the author used this text to give her argument a historical context and perhaps to appeal to her readers.
