Before Rwanda was colonized in that location were two main groups present, the Tutsi and the Hutu. The Tutsi were a small group that have cattle, the Hutu consisted of everyone else in the country. In the 1800s German Europeans came over to Rwanda (history 1990s). They caused a great divide between the Tutsi and the Hutu because they recognized the Tutsi and holding more European characteristics, they stood straighter and had lighter skin (history 1990s). Even though the Tutsis only contained ten percent of the population they were given leadership positions and the Hutu were forced into severe labour and spent many years being greatly oppressed (history 1990s). After many hard years the Hutus began to bear up and fight for their independence. In fear of a transition the Belgians gave leadership rolls over to the Hutu, greatly upsetting the Tutsi.
