Good versus Evil is represented through the two different populations, the Amish and the slope. The world of the English revolves around violence and action whereas the world of the Amish is surrounded by peace and serenity. An example which demonstrates the theme of Good versus Evil, is where Samuel witnesses murder during his magazine in the English world which is seen as a nefariousness in the Amish community.



As Samuel takes his first steps outside the world of the Amish he faces agony and confusion, this is demonstrated through the use of both a close-up shot and a point-of-view shot. The Close-up shot depicts Samuel in scourge and confusion as he has to comprehend what has happened; this therefore makes the audience display empathy for the child as he experiences the unknown.
