You All Know the Story of the Other Woman, was written by Anne Sexton. Sexton only lived to be xlvi years old before successfully committing suicide. She suffered from depression and had cardinal mental breakdowns throughout her life. Sexton saw writing as a way to escape. She was a confessional poet. Confessional is sometimes used to string the representation of extreme, personal, possibly painful experiences, for therapeutic or evacuant effect (Matterson 49). Sexton was often shunned because of the graphic material in her poems like adultery, suicide, and masturbation. Sexton once wrote that poetry should be a shock to the senses. It should hurt (McMahan 560).
The title of this poem foreshadows how the story result closing. More often then not, the other woman is unexpended with slide fastener but hurt and disappointing looks from society. While the antheral involved is able to return to his average life, as if nothing happened. The tone of this poem is extremely feministic.
This poem starts off with an allusion. Its a little Walden (Sexton 1). Walden is a book written by Henry David Thoreau, about living at Walden Pond and how just about euphoric it was. Sexton uses this allusion to compare an adulterous affair with Thoreaus euphoric Walden Pond.
Sexton uses a lot of symbolic representation in this poem. In the line, turning the clock back an hour (Sexton 11), she makes it wait as though him turning back the clock result erase their time spent together. Another example of symbolism in this poem is, the roof, the removable roof (Sexton 14). In this line, it is as if the other woman lives in a doll crime syndicate that he controls. This line also shows how much power he has over her everyday life. Daylight is nobodys helper (Sexton 6), is an example of personification in this poem. Daylight receives the human caliber of friendship. This poem uses similes to portray most of its meaning.
