This study is particularly relate about the disclosure and secretiveness in adolescent-parent relationship. Specifically, the study desire to investigate a) the adolescents and parents beliefs about adolescents obligations to detect on different issues; b) the beliefs about the legitimacy of parental authority; c) adolescents perceptions of actual disclosure and secrecy to parents and their; and d) the influences of different correlates on adolescents disclosure and secrecy.
Survey questionnaires were given to students of a suburban school district. Parental authority legitimacy and adolescents obligations to disclose were assessed by the parents and adolescents responses on 20 hypothetical issues. Disclosure was assessed by the parents and adolescents ratings on how a good deal adolescents tell or are willing to tell their parents without them asking.
Secrecy was assessed by the adolescents ratings on how often they keep secret or try to hide what they are doing from their parents. Different correlates (trust, conflict, parenting, and self-esteem) were as well assessed.
