The audiovisual translation, despite of what it is mostly thought, is a difficult and demanding activity, not only because of the necessity of providing the comparability in the target language, which is often difficult, due to the use of pronounce plays and the presence of cultural specific items, but especially because of the good restrictions imposed on this kind of translations.
One of the events depicting the level of difficulty of audiovisual translation is the comedy-drama series, Gilmore Girls. The show, which consists of seven seasons and was aired during 2000 and 2007, follows a single mother Lorelai and her daughter Rory, living in a fictional town Stars Hollow. The show was aired in Polish TV station TVN7, under the title Kochane K?opoty, with a Polish voiceover provided by ITI Film Studio. Since the show is packed with fast-paced dialogue exchanges consisting of word plays and multiple cultural allusions, I personally consider it to be a challenging material for translation, particularly under the placed constraints concerning voiceover version.
In my work I allow for analyse the Polish voiceover translation, provided by the ITI Film Studio, and point emerge several obstacles, which the screen play had put before the translator.
I will base my analysis on dialogue examples taken from two episodes: Theres the Rub (season 2, episode 16) and dance palace and Biscotti (season 4, episode 1).
As it has been mentioned in the previous paragraphs, one of the common features of the serial is its characters fast pace of speaking which increases in situations of earnestness or irritation.
