The origin of Public Undertakings or State controlled enterprises may be traced to the period of Chola kings before 12th cytosine who constructed roads, dams, temples, etc. The growth of State enterprises in recent multiplication can be seen in increased measure since Indias independency in 1947. The Industrial Policy Resolution of 1948 and 1956 emphasised the compulsion for State control in essential and strategic industries uniform steel, mining, petroleum, shipping etc.
