Diversity

Today, the word Diversity tends to create a picture of visual differences such as race or gender. In addition, in that respect ar incorrect perceptions and negatively charged stereotypes prevalent today, even afterwards extensive educational efforts go for been attempted in schools and businesses.

When I think of Diversity, I think of having any difference. This can overwhelm seen or unseen differences. For a child to feel rattling included and to be able to build confidence that they are special, they must always feel that differences are normal.

Adults, especially parents and teachers, have a significant influence on children and how their perceptions on variety are formed. Take Jane Elliotts fair-haired(a)/brown-eyed experiment back in 1968, which she conducted the day after Martin Luther King Jr. was murdered. Her intention was to help her students understand discrimination through actual experience. She divided her all-white, Riceville, Iowa troika graders into two groups based on their eye color. She proceeded to favor the blue-eyed children saying they were smarter and gave them special privileges. In contrast, she made the brown-eyed children wear collars and was negative towards them.

For both days, the children who were told they were inferior performed ill on tests, and the children who were told they were superior performed better. In addition, these same children were not courteous to the children told to be inferior and at times were even untamed to them. These were loving, kind children who enjoyed coming to school. In 1970, PBS-Frontline came to Jane Elliotts classroom to film the tertiary year of this experiment.
