The Ma campana Era Since the invention of the tele skirt in the belatedly 1870s, one conjunction and its affiliates came to the forefront of Americas telecommunications systems. That company was American Telephone & Telegraph (AT&T), known early on affectionately as Ma Bell. They could be easily place by their trademark and service mark Bell remains logo. Formed in 1877, the founders of the Bell dodgings were smart enough to substantiate that if they controlled the phone systems, manufactured the phones, they could then control the entire phone industry. With this in mind, they set about establishing member Bell System companies across America. Each member company paid a fixed fraction of their license payment to support Bell Labs (Bell System, 2007). On March 3, 1885, they founded the American Telephone and Telegraph beau monde (AT&T) to operate the original dogged distance call network and began to build their lines out from New York to Chicago, eventually reaching San Francisco. This resulted in Ma Bell nearly owning most of the local and long distance telephone service in the United States by 1940. With this type of control, Bell could legally charge its customers a fee for purchasing phones from outside vendors, and connecting them to the Bell telephone systems.
