In the beginning of the book a boy walks up to the Mowats house with a basket full of ducks and one puppy. The mother go victim to the boys bargain and buys the dog that is ulterior named Mutt. When the father first sees Mutt he gets angry because hes not a chase dog, so he thinks. At first, Mutt proves to be an annoying dog that snores in his sleep, argues with his family, and ignores orders.

But when Farley goes away for a short vacation, and comes back a few days later, Mutt had evidently gotten angry that he was left behind and his fur color changed from white and black, to black and blue the day after Farley left. Later that year in the Fall, Farley and his father went bird hunting without even bothering to see how unassailable Mutt would be.
